Muscle strains are very common and can happen to anyone at any point. If you’ve ever has a muscle strain you might have heard you should go see a kinesiologist, but not knowing what a kinesiologist does might stop you from going.

A muscle strain is the stretching or tearing of a muscle or tendon. The tendon is what connects the muscle to a bone. Any muscle on your body can be strained, but there are some common ones that happen to people. Some common strains are hamstring, quads, calf, groin, biceps and rotator cuff.

When you first visit a kinesiologist, they will do an assessment of your muscle strain and ask you questions on how it might of happened to get a better understanding of your situation. A physical examination will also be done, to assess the strain and figure out a treatment plan.

Muscle strains can be classified as 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree strains. The degree and level of severity can determine a treatment plan a kinesiologist will give you. A treatment plan can include education, recovery goals and future prevention.

There are a variety of treatments that can be used on muscle strains, such as heat and ice, taping, manual or self stretching and strengthening exercises. It’s important to see a kinesiologist immediately after an injury occurs. This will ensure you receive the most effective treatment plan and your strain be resolved without further injury.

If you are taking part in physical activity and have muscle pain for a few days after it might be time to see a kinesiologist to see if a muscle strain has occurred.
