Stop guessing which exercises are safe, useful or worth your time.
Kinesiology turns information about how you move into a practical plan for improving strength, function, confidence and physical capacity.
In Ontario, a Registered Kinesiologist is a regulated movement and performance health professional. The profession focuses on assessing human movement and performance and supporting its rehabilitation or management. In plain English: your kinesiologist looks at the demands of the life you want to live, assesses a relevant starting point and teaches you how to progress.
You do not need to be athletic, pain-free or comfortable in a gym before you begin. The assessment exists to meet you where you are.
Build the capacity to do more, not just a longer list of exercises.
Kinesiology may fit when your main barrier is uncertainty about movement, loss of strength or conditioning, fear of re-injury, or difficulty turning professional advice into a routine you can follow.
- Return to exercise after injury, illness, surgery or a long break
- Rebuild strength, balance, mobility and confidence for daily activity
- Progress from physio exercises toward broader fitness and functional goals
- Exercise with chronic conditions or recurring limitations in mind
- Prepare for work, recreation, sport or independent living demands
What movement problems can look like from day to day.
People rarely arrive with a neat label. They usually notice that familiar activities feel different, harder or less predictable. Describing those changes gives the kinesiologist useful context without asking you to diagnose yourself.
Guarding or recurring flare-ups
You may move cautiously, avoid a direction or notice symptoms return when work, sport or exercise demands increase.
Weakness or early fatigue
Stairs, carrying, standing, walking or repeated tasks may take more effort after injury, illness, surgery or inactivity.
Reduced balance or confidence
You may feel unsteady, move more slowly or hesitate to return to the activities you handled comfortably before.
Looking for physio? Understand where kinesiology fits.
People often search for a physiotherapist or physical therapy when pain or injury has made movement difficult. Physiotherapy and kinesiology can both contribute to recovery, but they are not interchangeable.
Fleming Fitness provides kinesiology, not physiotherapy. Physiotherapy may be the appropriate first step when you need diagnosis, hands-on treatment or care that falls within a physiotherapist's scope. Kinesiology is often useful when the priority is assessing movement and rebuilding capacity through active, progressive exercise. If you are already seeing a physio or physician, bring their recommendations so your exercise plan can respect them.
What happens during an assessment
Your assessment is not a pass-or-fail fitness test. It is a way to understand what matters to you, observe relevant movement and establish a starting point that can be revisited as you progress.
Your goals and history
Discuss symptoms, past care, current activity, concerns and the tasks you want to do more confidently.
Relevant movement testing
Review movement, strength, balance, mobility or endurance measures connected to your goals.
A practical next step
Understand what to work on, how to begin and when the plan should be adjusted or referred elsewhere.
What a typical kinesiology session feels like.
An assessment establishes the starting point. A regular session is more active and usually combines a brief check-in, individually selected movement and clear instruction you can carry into daily life.
Check in and adjust
Share how you felt after the last visit, what you practised and whether symptoms or daily demands changed.
Complete coached exercise
Warm up and work through strength, balance, mobility or conditioning exercises with feedback on form, pace and effort.
Review your next action
Leave knowing what to practise, what response is expected and what would be a reason to modify the plan or seek other care.
Choose the setting that makes it easier to follow through.
The best plan is one you can realistically attend and practise. Ask about clinic, in-home or virtual appointments based on your location, goals and equipment needs.
Kanata clinic
Use a private, equipped setting for movement assessment and coached exercise.
In-home kinesiology
Avoid the commute and practise movement in the environment where daily tasks happen.
Virtual guidance
Receive coaching and plan adjustments online when that format suits the service and your needs.
Questions about working with a Registered Kinesiologist.
What does a Registered Kinesiologist do?
A Registered Kinesiologist assesses human movement, function and performance. They use exercise, education and behaviour-change strategies to help maintain, rehabilitate or improve movement and performance. Your plan should reflect your current ability, relevant health information and goals.
Is kinesiology the same as physiotherapy or physical therapy?
No. They are distinct regulated health professions in Ontario. Fleming Fitness does not provide physiotherapy under its kinesiology service. A kinesiologist commonly focuses on movement assessment and progressive exercise, and may work with people who have completed physio or are following recommendations from another healthcare provider.
Do I need a referral to see a kinesiologist?
A referral may not be required to request an appointment, but an insurer, payer or another program may have its own rules. Confirm referral, credential and reimbursement requirements directly with the organization responsible for your plan.
What should I wear to a kinesiology assessment?
Wear comfortable clothing and footwear that allow you to move. Bring any relevant referral, restriction or exercise information you want the kinesiologist to consider.
Can a program be adapted around an injury or pain?
Yes, exercise can be adjusted to your current function and tolerance. New, severe, worsening or unexplained symptoms may require assessment by a physician, physiotherapist or another appropriate professional before exercise continues.
Are in-home or virtual kinesiology appointments available?
In-home and virtual appointments may be available depending on your location, goals and scheduling. Confirm service-area availability and any travel fee when booking.
